Compline will be sung at St. James’

Long Branch — On February 23 at 4:30 p.m., St. James’ Episcopal Church, 300 Broadway, will offer a sung Compline performed by the women of the St. James’ choir and led by Music Director James Douglas.   Compline, or night prayer, is a meditative candlelit service dating back to monastic life in the Middle Ages.

In keeping with the earliest practices of the monastic communities, Compline is offered when the work of the day is completed, and the quietness of evening settles over the hearts and minds of those who have come together.  As it has for centuries, Compline invokes a sense of protection and peace for the night that is to come and thanks for safe passage through the day that has past.

The Office of Compline is not designed as a performance for people to come and “hear,” it is a transformance of the individual worshipper.  The Compline service exists within the context of a society in general and the Christian Church in particular that have become increasing secularized.  Compline, however, speaks to spiritual values directed to nurture the soul.

All are welcome to this transforming service of worship.  There will be light refreshments in the Parish Hall immediately following. The service is offered without charge.  Regular Sunday masses are held at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.  All are welcome.
