Friday night, September 20, the Bulldogs of Rumson-Fair Haven traveled with their unbeaten football team into Bressett Stadium and faced the winless Green Wave of Long Branch on the “Army” Ippolito turf field. It wasn’t the outcome that LB was hoping for as RFH easily won 35-0 and improved to 3-0 on the season while the Green Wave drop to 0-4.
In the last decade the two schools have faced off five times. The last time that Long Branch defeated the Bulldogs was on October 10, 2014 with a 19-7 victory. Rumson-Fair Haven had a 28-0 win in 2015, 49-20 in 2019, 28-0 in 2020 and the last before Friday night was a 43-6 win in 2021. The last two seasons the two didn’t face each other.
Ben Woolley is the new head coach of the Wave this season after spending many seasons under former head coaches Dan George and Chad King. Long Branch has speed, and size, but this season it seems that they just haven’t found the right combination. There is a lot of talk about the difficult schedule that Long Branch has this year and the quality of teams in their division.
Long Branch is in the A North division of the Shore Conference. Currently Rumson-Fair Haven is on top followed by Red Bank Catholic, Marlboro, Middletown South, Colts Neck and the Green Wave. So far this season, Long Branch has been outscored 73-151, while Rumson-Fair Haven has put up 111 points and only allowed 34.
In the loss to the Bulldogs, the Green Wave had 59-passing yards with Quentin Fisher, junior quarterback, completing seven of 22 passes. Zahaki McDonald had three catches for 20 yards, Miguel Maldonado had two receptions for 23 yards, Nyron Snerling had one for nine and Christopher Moses also had one catch for seven yards.
On the ground, Long Branch also had 59 yards. Fisher ran the ball seven times for 33 yards and McDonald, junior, had nine touches for 26 yards. Total offense for the Green Wave was only 118 yards.
Next week, September 28, Long Branch will travel to Colts Neck to face the winless Cougars. So far this season, Colts Neck has lost 34-0 to Marlboro, 41-0 to Wall and 21-0 to Middletown South, being outscored 96-0.
Long Branch has lost 38-32 to Holmdel, 37-34 to Jackson Memorial, 41-7 to Red Bank Catholic and the 35-0 defeat by Rumson-Fair Haven. The Green Wave did play Colts Neck last season, and lost 57-20 on October 21.
