February 10, 2013Consumer Center is home to Home Depot, Pet Smart, buybuy Baby, Sports Authority, Chucky Cheese, Dollar Tree, Radio Shack, Verizon Store, and Payless to name a few. The Link News learned that employees of Buybuy Baby received a phone call that a bomb was in their store and time was ticking.
Police immediately responded and had all the stores evacuated as well as the surrounding home to the south of the complex. West Long Branch Police Chief Larry Mihlon was in the Home Depot store picking up a few items for his weekend project was he and other shoppers were asked to leave.
“I went outside and saw my officers and was briefed on what was taking place,” said Mihlon. Eatontown, Oceanport and Long Branch Police Departments also responded to help with the evacuation of the Consumer Center and assist in traffic control. “We also called in bomb dogs from Wall Township, Long Branch and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office. They conducted intensive searches of the stores and did not discover any devices.”
As police were clearing the area at 2:00pm they stopped and detained a man who was leaving the Consumer Center. Mihlon stated that police were speaking with man and would have further updates on Monday.
