Doggie make baby laugh with Cash and Char

October 13, 2013Looking to celebrate Columbus Day with a trip to the winner’s circle will be trainer Pat McBurney, who is set to saddle longshot Coco Delite in the Monday feature at the Meadowlands, a $30,000 allowance/optional claiming event at five furlongs on turf.
“She’s been real good around the barn since we got her,” said McBurney, “so let’s hope it all goes well on Monday.”
Through her last start on Sept. 14 of this year, Coco Delite was under the care of trainer Mary Eppler.
“We got her with the specific intent of running her up at the Meadowlands,” explained McBurney. “She’s a Jersey-bred so there’s another race for her up here after this one, but for now we’ll take it a race at a time.”
Coco Delite, a 4-year-old daughter of Crafty Fried from the Lost Code mare Winged Delite, has won two of her 11 career starts with both victories coming on the turf. Three back at Monmouth Coco Delite was able to shake free of her rivals early and held clear all the way to the wire to upset her foes at 10-1. According to the trainer, she’ll look to duplicate that effort on Monday.
“She has natural speed and we put the bug boy aboard to get off even more weight,” McBurney said. “Hopefully she gets out of the gate good and does her thing from there.”
Jockey Jonathan Zayas, a seven-pound apprentice, has the call as the pair will break from post 10, the far outside in the field.
Monday’s Columbus Day card gets underway at 2:15 p.m. with gates opening at 11:30 a.m. The all-turf Monmouth-at-Meadowlands Thoroughbred meet runs through Nov. 2 with live cards on Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays, with the exception of Oct. 21, which will be a dark day.
