KJ525 Philanthropy Club was founded by Jerome and Kathryn Hamlin in 2007. The club seeks to educate students and parents about the importance of saving money, and believes this is best done through attaining a thorough education.
The Philanthropy Club offers a savings program and investment strategies.
After attending three consecutive meetings with their parents or guardians, students are given a savings account of $50. Further stipends of $25 are given to those who show consistent growth in their school work every marking period or college semester. Additionally, the KJ525 401k program provides students with 25 percent interest.
In conjunction with learning about investment terminology, functions and calculations, students participate twice a year in an investment challenge. During it, they are provided with virtual funds of $10,000 to invest in a realistic stock market environment. The top three earners receive prizes of $50-$200.
KJ525 stresses and requires parental participation, believing that the greatest success is achieved when parents take a proactive role in the education of their children.
It also offers a scholarship to college bound high school students and current college students who display extraordinary academics.
KJ525 meets monthly, and is open to all students from third grade to college.
