October 4, 2024Trenton – A Senate Joint Resolution sponsored by Senator Vin Gopal that would designate the last weekend in October of each year as “Honor Your Hometown Weekend” in New Jersey was approved by the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee.
“Across New Jersey, our communities and municipalities are a continuing source of pride for the residents who call them home,” said Senator Gopal (D-Monmouth). “This resolution is a way for all of us to recognize the deep ties our neighbors have with one another, and the sense of place that reminds people where they come from, and how their identities have been shaped by a shared history and common values.”
The resolution, SJR 70, would request the Governor to issue an annual proclamation calling upon public officials and citizens to observe “Honor Your Hometown Weekend” with appropriate programs and activities.
“The campaign to honor America’s hometowns and its Medal of Honor recipients is a grassroots, non-partisan effort to celebrate our common heritage and honor the heroes who gave everything to preserve our democracy,” said Freehold Mayor Kevin A. Kane, a strong supporter of the resolution. “New Jersey, with its rich history, and Freehold, with its global American ambassador, Bruce Springsteen, are the ultimate expressions of America’s achievements and its promise.”
The bill, SJR 70, was released by a vote of 5-0.
