Joao Jose (John) Guiomar, known to most as “Johnny G,” passed away unexpectedly on August 20, 2024, with his sons by his side.
Born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1960, he began traveling the world with numerous trips to Jersey, England. He then spent his early-adolescent years in South Africa before settling in Long Branch, New Jersey in 1977.
From the time he could walk, John started kicking around a soccer ball and went on to become an amazingly talented soccer player! In 1982, he was the recipient of the McDonald’s All American Player award for the Brookdale Community College team. He was a die-hard Sporting fan and shared his incredible skills not only with his sons, but also as a coach for local youth teams. John continued to stun and astonish on the field scoring the majority of goals for every team he played with right up until his last game this June at the age of 63. John worked so hard all his life- first as a busboy then a bartender at some of the area’s most popular restaurants and bars. Finally, John established the iconic Springdale Cafe in Long Branch where he was able to share his gift of entertaining and hosting and created fabulous memories not only for himself, but also for countless locals.
In 2004 and 2005, the proudest stage of his life began when he became a father to his two sons, Joseph and Andrew. Raising his boys was truly the most important thing in his life. He did everything he could for them, teaching them the many life-lessons he learned and instilled in them the importance of hard work, perseverance, generosity, structure, and even his sense of style. He was a devoted father who cared for them endlessly and shared everything he had with them. The three of them had an unbreakable bond, even their own lingo, and his uniqueness will continue to shine through them. In addition to his passion for soccer, John loved to travel, especially home to Alcabideche and Cascais in Portugal as well as to Negril, Jamaica. A perfect day would include a morning bike ride and other types of training, some sun and swimming at the beach then his pool, a soccer game on TV, and, certainly, time with his family. Joao is predeceased by his loving parents Laurentino and Amalia Guiomar. He is survived by his two beautiful sons, Joseph John and Andrew Michael Guiomar, who will honor their father, carry on his legacy and continue to make him proud. John also leaves behind numerous loved-ones, family, and friends who all feel privileged to
have been a part of his life.
