Dr. Fisher is recognized with Excellence in Medicine Award

Long Branch — Monmouth Medical Center Chair of Pediatrics and Medical Director of The Unterberg Children’s Hospital, Margaret (Meg) C. Fisher, M.D, was recently named recipient of the Edward J. Ill Physician’s Award, one of the 2015 Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine awards, for her distinguished service as a leader in the medical profession and in the community.

First awarded in 1939 and sponsored by the MDAdvantage Insurance Company, the Excellence in Medicine awards are named after New Jersey physician Edward J. Ill. Dr. Ill was a pioneer in promoting continuing education in ways that set the national standard.

Each year, exemplary New Jersey physicians and leaders whose dedication top education, research and public service has significantly impacted the delivery of health care in the state and around the nation are honored.

Dr. Fisher is a world-renowned pediatric infectious disease consultant. In addition to making history as the first woman to serve as president of Monmouth Medical Center’s nearly 1,000-member medical and dental staff, she is former Chair of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section of Infectious Diseases and twice a member of the Committee of Infectious Diseases (Red Book Committee), positions in which she helped to establish national guidelines and standards for health care for children and adolescents.

Dr. Fisher joined Monmouth Medical Center in 2000. In addition to serving as medical director at The Unterberg Children’s Hospital, she also serves as professor of Pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa., and at St. George’s University School of Medicine, Grenada.

Prior to joining Monmouth Medical Center, Dr. Fisher served as hospital epidemiologist and attending in pediatric infectious diseases at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, Pa., where she also completed her pediatric residency and fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases. Dr. Fisher earned her medical degree from the University of California at Los Angeles School of medicine and completed her undergraduate education at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pa.

A recipient of numerous awards, Dr. Fisher has been regularly identified as a “Top Doc” in the area of Pediatric Infectious Disease and is a frequent speaker for continuing medical education locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. She is a past president of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and serves on the national American Academy of Pediatrics’ Disaster Preparedness Advisory Council.

Dr. Fisher also serves on the Board of Directors of the Central Jersey Family Health Consortium, the Ronald McDonald Houses of Long Branch and New Brunswick and Monmouth Family Health Center.
This year’s awards will be presented at the Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards ceremony on May 6, 2015 at Greenacres Country Club in Lawrenceville, N.J. All profits from the event will be dedicated to support seven medical and health care student scholarships.
