The Shore Regional High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team had to wait two days
to get their 2012 season going. The
April 1, opener against Long Branch was canceled on Saturday as a result of bad
weather. Monday, the Blue Devils hosted the Scarlet Fliers of Neptune High
School to start the season.
Sophomores Jack Kelly and Luis Bernardes, both midfielders, scored two goals
each as the Blue Devils downed the Scarlet Fliers 7-2, and won their first game
of the season. Three other Shore players found the net each getting a goal.
Luke Dwyer, an attacker, and Jonathan Junquiera, midfielder, both sophomores
scored in the win over Neptune. Nick Scherzinger, a junior, had the other Shore
goal.
The Blue Devils took a 3-2 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter was
scoreless. During the second half of action Shore Regional scored three goals
in the third quarter and one in the final. They also held the Fliers scoreless
after the first quarter.
In goal for Shore Regional was sophomore Andrew Johnsen,
who had eight saves. Shore held a 16-10 shot on goal advantage. The boy’s
lacrosse team is part of a new wave in funding high school sports; it’s a “Pay
to Play” team. It is open to all high school students.
Uniform cost is estimated at $400 and equipment cost is
estimated at $500, so any male athlete who wants to play lacrosse must pay $900
for the season. Parents are responsible for team helmet, gloves, uniform,
protective equipment and stick. Gregg Malfa is the head coach, and his Blue
Devils play in the Shore Conference B North division.
