Beach replenishment in Long Branch
April 6, 2014Long Branch couple arrested on robbery charges
April 7, 2014Long Branch – Monday morning in the city is just like any other weekday during the school year, thousands of children heading off to one of the ten public schools in the district. Traffic is especially heavy around the Middle and High School campus. However, on April 7, around 7:30 a.m., it became a traffic nightmare as two accidents occurred at the same intersection within seconds of each other.
Long Branch Police quickly responded to a report that two vehicles had collided at the intersection of Westwood Avenue and Beatty Lane, and that a utility pole was knocked down. What police didn’t realize at the time was a second accident had also occurred at the same intersection, as two other vehicles collided trying to avoid the first accident.
Beatty Lane is the entrance to the Middle and High School campus, and administrators and school nurses as well as safe school officers also responded to assist the Long Branch Police. Westwood Avenue had to be closed for about 40 minutes while the investigation was conducted and wreckers were called in to remove three of the four vehicles.
Long Branch Fire Aid also responded and transported three females who were passengers in several of the vehicles involved in the accidents to Monmouth Medical Center. The pole which broke was owned by JCP&L and had a live wire which was down and touching part of the fence that was on the property of the old High School.
Police had called JCP&L to respond and the Long Branch Public Schools Buildings and Grounds Department placed cones and caution tape around the area and two school security officers were posted to make sure that residents and students stayed away from the fence until the power company arrived.
Long Branch Police did not issue the names of the individuals involved in the accident or if any summonses were issued or will be issued. Long Branch Public Schools suffered damage to the fence and minor damage to some track and field equipment.
