September 16, 2015Long Branch — The Greater Long Branch Ministerium CROP Hunger Walk 2015 will take place Sunday, Oct. 18, starting at the Great Lawn by the boardwalk, Ocean Avenue.
Registration begins at 2:30 p.m., and the Walk begins at 3:00 p.m.
CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by Church World Service and organized by local congregations or groups to raise funds to end hunger at home and around the world.
CROP Hunger Walks help to support the overall ministry of Church World Service, especially grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts around the world.
In addition, each local CROP Hunger Walk can choose to return up to 25 percent of the funds it raises to hunger-fighting programs in its own community.
Everyone is invited to participate in the 2015 Crop Walk to help end hunger one step at a time.
Church World Service has been holding these walks for more than 45 years. According to its website, on October 17, 1969, a thousand people in Bismarck, ND, walked in what may have been the start of the hunger walks related to CROP – and raised $25,000 to help stop hunger.
The first walk to be called a CROP walk took place next year.
