Littoral Society August Field Notes

The American Littoral Society’s South Jersey R-Corps unit brought our Critters, Creeks and Coasts program to Millville, NJ in late July, as part of the Public Library’s Summer Reading Program – “Adventure Begins at Your Library”. See more photos on our Facebook page.

New website, same mission! International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICC) is Saturday, September 21 and the American Littoral Society is once again using that date as the official kickoff for the New York State Beach Cleanup program, which runs from August through December. During a recent seining excursion, we caught an abundance of local species that are common along the New Jersey coastline. We hosted about 25 participants, from adults to young children. Read more on our website.

The American Littoral Society’s Toni Rose Tablante made an appearance in a story by CBS News Correspondent Conor Knighton, who visited New Jersey beaches along the Delaware Bay to learn about horseshoe crabs. Environmentalists, including representatives from the American Littoral Society, gathered on the boardwalk in Asbury Park in early August to celebrate publication by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection of proposed new guidelines for development along the Jersey Shore. Upstream Alliance and the American Littoral Society recently hosted the 5th annual Floatopia! 80 floaters joined us and the Schooner North Wind on the Delaware River for a celebration of clean water and a swimmable, accessible, fishable, and equitable (SAFE) river!
