How the game started and how it finished were drastically different.
The Caseys of Red Bank Catholic were in Long Branch on Saturday afternoon for a Shore Conference A North divisional battle. Both teams had lost their first two games of the season, so they were hungry for a win.
Long Branch had two very close games, losing their opener 38-32 to Holmdel and then were beaten 37-34 by Jackson Memorial last week. Red Bank Catholic started their season in Delaware where Middletown beat them 17-14. Last week, the Caseys lost 44-0 to national powerhouse Don Bosco Prep.
The game started as a defensive battle with Red Bank Catholic starting in the Green Wave red zone. However, Long Branch denied the Caseys any ground in that opening series. The entire first quarter had low offensive production, and ended scoreless.
All that changed in the second quarter, when the Caseys started to put things in motion. Frankie Williams, senior quarterback at RBC, was getting comfortable in the pocket as his offensive line was giving him time to find his receivers. The result, the Caseys scored 21 unanswered second quarter points.
Red Bank Catholic, with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter facing a first and ten at the Long Branch 34, had Williams connecting on a touchdown pass giving his team a 28-0 lead.
On the Long Branch ensuing offensive series, they fumbled the ball and RBC recovered on the Green Wave eight-yard line. One play later, the Caseys were now up 34-0 with 2:57 left in the third quarter. The rules call for a running clock when an opponent has such a big lead.
Long Branch did have one bright spot. In the final minutes of the game, Quentin Fisher, junior quarterback, threw a 58-yard bomb to senior Aulander Daniels, who made a perfect over the shoulder catch for the only touchdown of the game for the Green Wave.
Williams threw three touchdown passes for the Caseys and ran for another. His scoring passes were to Jordan Mosenthine, Chris Gibson and Daniel Zabora. Johnny Williams, junior, was a dangerous on the returns for the Caseys. He had speed, strength and terrific hands in collecting kick offs and punt returns.
Defensively the Green Wave had strong showings from linebackers Joseph Corley, Javier Guzman, Tyler Taylor.
Long Branch will have another rough game on Friday night, September 20, as they host Rumson-Fair Haven and face the 2-0 Bulldogs. In their two wins, the Bulldogs beat Point Boro 41-28 and Marlboro 35-6.
