Long Branch – A large hole on a beach collapsed and buried a 12-year old boy who is currently in the intensive care unit at Monmouth Medical Center.
Police stated that the young victim and his 10-year old brother had created the large hole or tunnel on the beach between Madison and Cooper avenues around 3:20pm, when it collapsed. The younger brother ran for help. Lifeguards, police and sunbathers all frantically started digging out the 12-year old. It was reported that once he was pulled out of the sand CPR was immediately started.
A responding Long Branch fire truck hit a man who was holding his four year old daughter in his arms. The man has been identified as Richard Polasdas, 46, of Lakewood, Colorado; he was hit by the fire truck at 3:30pm at the intersection of Ocean and Madison avenues.
Police have reported that Polasdas suffered a broken hip, and his daughter had abrasions. Both were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. It has not been disclosed which of the Long Branch fire companies the fire truck was assigned or the name of the driver. Long Branch has a mix of paid and volunteer firefighters.
According to witness reports the boy was unconscious was he was pulled out of the sand and might have had a bloody nose. Some reports say that the boy’s mother was at his side while lifeguards performed CPR.
