May 7, 2014Eatontown — Several homes were briefly evacuated last Thursday after a report a gas line had been cut.
According to the Eatontown Police Department, on May 1, at 10:31 a.m., the police and Eatontown Fire Department responded to 5 Surrey Lane after a 9-1-1 call was received advising that a gas line had been cut at that residence.
When officers arrived, they learned that there was construction being performed on the residence and a gas line had been cut by someone while working on the house, under the incorrect assumption that the natural gas had already been shut off.
Several residences on Old Shark River Road and Surrey Lane were evacuated due to the gas leak and New Jersey Natural Gas responded to the scene.
By 11:14 a.m. New Jersey Natural Gas had shut off the natural gas to the home and all of the residents were back in their homes. All emergency service units cleared the scene and New Jersey Natural Gas remained on scene to further work on the line.
The Eatontown Police Department, Eatontown Fire Department, and the Eatontown Fire Inspector all responded to the scene.
Fire Inspector Rudy Trask and Patrol Officer Christopher Bartlett are investigating how the line was cut and by whom.
No one was hurt as a result of the incident.
