June 18, 2014It is that time of year; schools will be closing for the summer recess. The Link News wants to remind all drivers to be use caution and to remember:
1. SLOW DOWN: Speed limits are in place for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling 25 mph is nearly two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling just 10 mph faster.
2. COME TO A COMPLETE STOP: Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks or in the street.
3. ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS: Taking your eyes off the road for just two (2) seconds doubles your chances of crashing. And children can be quick, crossing the road unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars. Don’t use your cell phone while driving!
4. REVERSE RESPONSIBLY: Every vehicle has blind spots. Check for children on sidewalks, in the driveway and around your vehicle before you back-up slowly.
5. WATCH FOR BICYLES/SKATEBOARDS: Children on bikes/skateboards are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three (3) feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicyclist. If your child rides a bike, require that they wear a properly fitted helmet.
6. TALK TO YOUR TEENS: Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens in the United States, and more than one in four fatal crashes involving teens occur between 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
